A review of Kyth the Taker - https://conniesboekkies.wordpress.com/2017/07/20/9802/

A somewhat rough translation:

"Previously on my blog I discussed two books written by Steph Swainston, the covers designed by Todd Sanders. I admire his work and therefore follow him on Twitter. Via Twitter, I received from him the request as to whether I read short stories as well as books. I certainly do not read them as often as I would like. I received from him a collection containing three short stories with the request of a review on my blog.

After reading, I certainly thought it worthwhile to discuss my blog, just in Dutch ... I'm sure the readers who love fantasy and excitement and reading English can appreciate these stories!

Jonathan L. Howard is game designer, scriptwriter and a true veteran in the computer games world. He writes fantasy and young adult stories. His first novel dates back to 2009. Kyth the Taker is a collection of three short stories about Kyth, a thief and mercenary. Two of the stories previously appeared in a fantasy magazine 'The Black Gate' and were received with great praise.

Kyth is the hero of the story, though she is a hard-boiled thief and mercenary who is hired to tidy up all kinds of little matters. She is smart, challenging and an especially strong woman who can hold her own in a world of crazy men. In all three stories, she does not walk away from a challenge. What especially interested me is that there a psychological undertone to the stories. Kyth's mindset is well described and far from violence and pure action. Of course there is the necessary tension, but this in the tales has been interwoven in a different manner.

The stories are written well, characters are well defined, and although the stories are about the same person, each is its own narrative. There is a clear beginning and end, so you can step into the story because the writer provides enough information to properly follow the story. And I always think that is clever in short stories. Sometimes I think writing in a short story that is often more difficult because you have less time to convey what is needed to keep the reader's attention. And that is successful in this collection.

Furthermore, the main character is a powerful figure that really deserves more than a short story, I think she can carry a whole novel!

Thanks to Todd Sanders for making available the reading copy and the image of the cover."
